Mentoring Program

The Connecting Skills Mentoring Program aims to help highly-skilled newcomer (migrants and refugees) professionals improve their employment potential by connecting them with mentors from their industry or occupation.

Newcomers bring talent, innovation and international expertise to Western Australia, but they need information and networks to succeed. The Connecting Skills Mentoring Program connects skilled and professional migrants and refugees with mentors in their field. Mentors help guide newcomers on a pathway to find employment within their industry. This benefits both the newcomers and employers in Western Australia by sharing new ideas and boosting business development and cultural diversity in both the workplace and the community.

Employer partners – recruited for the program – provide eligible job seekers with access to professional mentors. Mentors work with their mentees to build an understanding of:

  • Australian workplace culture
  • recruitment practices
  • occupationally specific professional networks to assist them to achieve their career goals.

About the Program

The program runs for a minimum of 18 mentoring hours over three months with mentors and mentees working together for approximately 1.5 hours each week. Connections can be through:

  • face-to-face meetings
  • online e.g. email, chat applications, Skype, etc
  • phone conversations
  • job shadowing
  • networking at events.
